Large crimson-red lined glass footed bowl (tazza),decorated with wheel-engraved hunting scenes, Bohemia,second half of the 19th century, circa 1860-1880.
DescriptionSumptuous overlay glass tazza, composed of a colorless crystal corecrystal core covered by a layer of intense ruby-red glass.glass. The decoration, executed by wheel engraving, revealsthe milky white glass in reserve on the crimson background, in the great traditiontradition of Bohemian master glassmakers.
The wide, shallow bowl features a scalloped rim with regular lobes.scalloped rim with regular lobes. It is decorated all around with a forest scenewith a forest scene of great finesse: a stag with majestic antlersdeer stands out in a clearing, surrounded by oak foliage in anexceptional naturalistic rendering. The bottom of the bowl, seen from abovereveals a circular composition animated by hares leapingleaping among the branches - a scene that can only be seen from above, andof each surface.
The foot, slender and architectural, is composed of a baluster shaftwith finely carved vertical ribs, a faceted median nodewith cabochons, and an enlarged circular base underlined by aa row of polished cabochons. The quality of the foot carving rivalswith that of the cup engraving.
IconographyThe decoration is part of the hunting and forestry repertoire(Jagdstil) repertoire popular in Bohemian glassmaking in the second halfthe second half of the 19th century: deer, hares, tall trees,grasses and undergrowth treated with remarkable pictorial realism.This decorative vocabulary, aimed at aristocratic and middle-class customersbourgeois clientele, was particularly sought-after for hunting buffets andhunting buffets and ceremonial tables.
