Rare Pyrographed Cedar Chest, Venice, 17th Century
A rare carved and pyrographed wooden chest: for this type of work, typical of the Venice region in the 17th century, cedar wood was generally used (a wood with a sweet fragrance and properties that protect fabrics).
The front of this chest features small scenes of wild animal hunts, overseen by two larger figures.
The lid is decorated with a central scene of celebration—perhaps the wedding of the two figures positioned on either side of this scene, for whom the chest was intended.
The chest is in good overall condition; unfortunately, the pyrographed scenes are partially worn away.
It shows signs of wear, has a few missing pieces, a trim strip that may have been replaced (at the bottom), and an old lock that is not original.
