The term "cantou chair" refers to a one or two-seater bench chest where salt was kept in a very dry place. It was placed against one of the interior walls of the "cantou", a more or less monumental fireplace used in Auvergne, Cantal and the southwest of France. From the Middle Ages to the 20th century, this fireplace was the central element of the peasant house and the center of family life.
