Originating from Rodez, this sculpture is part of the particularly prolific architectural tradition of Rodez in the mid-16th century, a period during which the city saw the completion of several major religious construction projects begun in the late Middle Ages.
Pink sandstone was one of Rodez’s signature materials at the time. It lent a sense of unity to Notre-Dame Cathedral, whose construction, begun in 1277, continued into the 16th century.
Through its material, architectural style, and iconography, this corbel thus serves as an interesting example of Rouergue sculpture during the transition from the late Gothic period to the Renaissance.
