Set Of 46 Antique Japanese Cards – Hyakunin Isshu

A refined piece of Japanese poetic tradition, preserved through more than two centuries of history.
The set consists of 46 original Japanese cards for Hyakunin Isshu, the famous traditional game based on the poetry collection Hyakunin Isshu—“One Hundred Poems by One Hundred Poets,” one of the most important anthologies of Japanese waka poetry.
The cards can be roughly dated to the second half of the 18th century through the early 19th century (approximately 1750–1800) and come from a private collection. Their craftsmanship bears witness to the ancient artisanal tradition associated with the production of Japanese poetry cards, where calligraphy, imagery, and precious materials come together. They are embellished with details in genuine gold leaf, while the cards bearing the inscriptions feature silver leaf decorations.

The Hyakunin Isshu traces its origins to the 13th century, when the poet and compiler Fujiwara no Teika selected one hundred poems composed by as many authors who lived over the course of several centuries. The collection includes famous waka poems dedicated to love, nature, nostalgia, separation, and the transience of life. During the Edo period, the Hyakunin Isshu also became an extremely popular pastime. The poems were, in fact, adapted into card games, giving rise to a tradition still practiced in Japan today.
The illustrated cards generally depict the poets, while others feature the verses of the poems, creating a refined dialogue between image, text, and memory.
