The composition simulates a collection of prints and watercolor drawings arranged in a fan-like pattern on a wooden surface, following the tradition of trompe l'oeil with antiquarian subjects that was widespread from the late 18th century through the early decades of the 19th century. The individual “sheets” depict subjects of an encyclopedic and collectible nature: a knight in armor on a rearing steed, a bird perched on flowering branches against a Pompeian red background, a classical female figure taken from an engraving on a Greek vase, a Vestal Virgin at an altar, monkeys in a landscape, a four-quartile heraldic coat of arms, and a bovine in an open field. The variety of subjects and simulated techniques—from watercolor to black-and-white print, from pen-and-ink drawing to colored tempera—reveals the skill of an artist well-versed in antiquarian collections and the printmaking techniques of the time.
