Provenance: from the Seville region of Spain.
Made entirely of brass with a leather scabbard; the design was created in 1804 by the supplier DUC. Guard with a hollowed-out single branch; outer guard plate shaped like a shield and engraved with an anchor; the guard branch ends in a ball-shaped crossguard. The crossguard is hollowed out on the underside. Short-tailed cap. Wooden grip covered in leather, wrapped with brass wire. “DUC” hallmark stamped on the quillon.
Klingenthal blade, 70 cm long and 4 cm wide at the heel, with a beveled point. The hollow sides are engraved on each face with “GARDE IMPÉRIALE” in large cursive letters within a cartouche featuring rope, an anchor, and palmettes.
Wooden scabbard sheathed in black waxed leather, with brass fittings including the cap, central strap, and pommel; brass tip, brass rings. Brass ring pins on the lugs.
A naval anchor is hot-stamped into the leather of the scabbard beneath the pommel,

Sword in its original condition from the Seville region of Spain, bearing cuts and dents from the famous battle. This saber saw action in the Spanish War and the Battle of Bailén in 1808 (a major turning point that marked the first French defeat in Andalusia). Sold with a certificate.
Blade length: approximately 87.5 / 88 cm.
France. First Empire.
Note: C. Ariés rightly jokes about this: “But it is important to warn these collectors, for these weapons are relatively few in number compared to the imitations made toward the end of the Empire.”
