19th-century Devotional Oil On Canvas Painting - Circle Of Jozef Janssens

A beautiful 19th-century religious oil painting, executed in the style of the Flemish school or the Nazarene movement by an artist associated with Jozef Janssens (1854–1930).

The work depicts a scene from the Stations of the Cross, showing Jesus falling under the weight of the cross on his way to Calvary. It follows the traditional iconography of the Passion, depicting one of Christ’s falls (the first, second, or third) along the Via Dolorosa.

The artist executed this work with skill, in a style characteristic of contemplative European paintings of the late 19th century. Rich in detail, the composition features several figures in vibrant clothing and a variety of historical costumes—ranging from Roman armor to Renaissance attire—surrounding Jesus, who is prostrate and clad in a white tunic.
