Mid-19th Century Painting Of The Poetess Sapphus By Enrico Fanfani

Refined medium-large oil on canvas painting, embellished with a carved and gilded wooden frame. The painting depicts the famous Greek poet Sappho, whose identification is further confirmed by the presence of her inscription at the bottom left. The woman is depicted with a romantic flair, looking out from a window overlooking a landscape on the horizon. Her gaze, directed outward, is tender, almost amorous, in keeping with the poetic nature of the figure, as Sappho is known for her celebrated love poems written on the island of Lesbos, her homeland. The woman wears rich, colorful robes, a veil covering her raven hair, secured by a diadem on her forehead.
