Large Carved And Gilded Venetian Mirror In The Rococo Style, Late 19th – Early 20th Century
An important Venetian mirror, dating from the late 19th to the early 20th century, characterized by a richly decorated wooden frame that is finely carved, openwork, and gilded with gold leaf, inspired by 18th-century Venetian Baroque and Rococo designs. The particularly elaborate composition is centered around a large, shaped central mirror, framed by a succession of broad volutes, curls, plant motifs, and floral patterns. The upper section is embellished with a dynamic openwork cornice, within which a second small shaped mirror is set. Of particular note are the large side volutes, carved almost entirely openwork, which give the mirror an extremely decorative and light silhouette despite its substantial size. The gilding retains a beautiful antique patina, with natural variations in tone, minor wear, and surface imperfections consistent with the object’s age, which highlight the depth of the carving. The mirrors are not original to the frame, but they are nonetheless period pieces and feature a beautiful, weathered silver plating, with widespread oxidation and surface alterations that give them a particularly evocative appearance that blends well with the mirror frame.Overall, the frame is in good condition, considering its age and the complexity of the carving. There are a few small, old repairs and reinforcements, also visible on the back. Noteworthy is a scroll element at the bottom that shows more pronounced deterioration, likely due to past exposure to humidity or storage conditions, with some warping and irregularities in the wood. The upper part, on the other hand, is in particularly good condition, aside from minimal repairs and normal signs of aging. A mirror with a striking decorative presence, notable for the quality of its carving and its impressive proportions, ideal as a focal point in both a classical setting and, by contrast, a contemporary interior.Venice, late 19th – early 20th century.
