Limoges Enamel Plaque Depicting Christ On The Cross - France, 19th Century

Limoges Enamel Plaque with the Crucified Christ - France, 19th century

Elegant oval devotional plaque in Limoges enamel, made in France during the 19th century, depicting the Crucified Christ.

Executed in enamel painted on copper, with a deep blue background, rendered in grisaille in light tones and featuring exquisite golden highlights, complemented by refined ornamental decoration in gold.

The complex craftsmanship, involving successive layers of enamel application and firing, is part of the 19th-century revival tradition of Limoges enamels.

The figure of Christ, rendered in refined ivory-white tones, stands out with extraordinary clarity against the deep midnight blue background, in keeping with the characteristic color palette of Limoges enamel.

The face, the anatomy, and the drapery of the loincloth are defined by delicate chiaroscuro effects, while a subtle golden halo surrounds Christ’s head, accentuating his sacred nature.

Of particular note is the rich ornamental gold border, finely decorated with elegant scrolls, volutes, and plant motifs, which frames the scene with great refinement and creates a striking contrast with the dark enamel background.

The craftsmanship and decorative quality reflect the prestigious tradition of Limoges enamels, renowned since the Middle Ages for the production of devotional works and objects of extraordinary refinement, which enjoyed a resurgence in popularity in the 19th century thanks to historicist tastes and the rediscovery of ancient enamel techniques.

The reverse, with its characteristic metallic surface and traces of craftsmanship, retains a beautiful antique patina consistent with the period.

An object of considerable devotional charm and collector’s interest, particularly suited for a collection of sacred art, French enamels, and 19th-century decorative arts.
