Charrière Surgical Kit

Case marked "CHARRIERE | Manufacturer of Surgical Instruments | 6 rue de l'École de médecine [Paris] - By Patent," circa 1850–1860, soft brown shagreen pouch lined with purple Russian leather on the inside, metal clasp marked “J. C. Déposé,” silver and steel instruments, handles made of tortoiseshell and brown horn.
A lovely case with three folding flaps, one of which is lined on the inside, containing about thirty instruments, most signed "Charrière," some bearing the inscription "Par brevet d’invention".
Includes, among other items: 3 lancets with tortoiseshell holders, signed; 1 finely crafted stylus, unscrewable into three parts; one end features a mechanical pencil that can be retracted into a compartment via a push button, along with a lead reservoir; 2 pairs of scissors, signed (rare); needle-tipped styluses; 3 scalpels with tortoiseshell handles (straight, convex, and buttoned), with patented and signed interchangeable blades; 1 silver probe; 1 double curette, signed; in a small separate compartment shaped like a miniature wallet are needle-tipped instruments; in another compartment are pins.
An elegant, very well-preserved kit containing a complete set of instruments. On the central inner flap is a gold inscription from the Charrière firm. The initials “J. C. Déposé” on the clasp refer to Jules Charrière, who brilliantly led the Charrière company following in his father’s footsteps beginning in 1852, but who died prematurely of pneumonia in 1865.
Case in good condition, with some scuffing and small tears in places.
