Ernest Gaston Marché (1864–1932) – Large Painting, Oil On Canvas, Farmyard

Artist: Ernest Gaston Marché (1864–1932)

A large original oil-on-canvas painting by Ernest Gaston Marché (1864–1932), titled “Farmyard, Villefranche-Saint-Phal.” This work was exhibited at the 1926 Paris Salon.

The scene depicts a charming farmhouse on the edge of a pond, with ducks gathered near a small arched stone bridge. The sun illuminates the light-colored walls and weathered tiled roofs, while soft reflections shimmer on the water’s surface. A curved path runs alongside the buildings and leads into the surrounding countryside.

A lively, textural brushstroke, combined with a harmonious palette of soft blues, warm ochres, and fresh greens, captures the light and atmosphere of the French countryside. Touches of purple in the shadows add depth and color to the old buildings.

Ernest Gaston Marché was a French landscape painter born in Nemours. Known for his views of the Loing Valley, he studied in Paris at the École des Arts Décoratifs and the Académie Julian. He also served as curator of the Château-Musée de Nemours from 1911 until his death in 1932.

Signed in the lower right corner, this generously sized landscape would be perfectly at home in a country house or a collection of French paintings.
