Small Russian Icon With Silver-plated Metal Frame – Late 19th / Early 20th Century

Russian icon depicting Christ Pantocrator (Christ Almighty), dating from the late 19th or early 20th century.The work presents the classic half-length image of Jesus Christ: He is shown blessing with His right hand according to Orthodox liturgy and holding an open Gospel book in His left hand.Inscribed on the pages of the Gospel in Old Church Slavonic is the famous passage from the Gospel of John: "A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another" (John 13:34).The gilded halo bears traditional Greek inscriptions ("I Am That I Am") and the Christograms IC XC on either side.Mounting and details:The painting on wood is enclosed within an elegant frame made of metal sheeting, richly embossed with scrollwork motifs and featuring a protective folded edge. The back of the icon is entirely covered in its original period velvet—purple/crimson in color—and includes a small metal loop for hanging.Condition:The icon is in excellent overall condition and retains all its original components, displaying a pleasing, natural patina of age on both the painted surfaces and the metal elements.
