Gilded And Silver-plated Bronze Phoenix Forming A Secret Ring - Napoleon III Era

A rare and intriguing work of art from the Napoleon III period depicting a phoenix perched on a leafy branch, which in turn rests on a rocky mound.

Crafted in gilded and silvered bronze, this elegant sculpture stands out for the great finesse of its execution and the quality of its chiseled detailing. The plumage, the widely spread wings, the long neck, the beak, and the eyes are rendered with great precision.

The alternation of gilded and silvered sections—particularly on the neck, wings, and rocky base—creates a particularly refined decorative contrast.

A push button concealed at the base of the tail opens the wings and provides access to a compartment inside the bird’s body, presumably intended to hold rings or small pieces of jewelry.

The opening mechanism works perfectly.

An object as decorative as it is unusual, characteristic of the Second Empire’s taste for precious bronzes, mechanized objects, and creations inspired by the animal and fantastical worlds.

Napoleon III period, second half of the

19th century.
