Late 18th-century European School, C. 1800 – Portrait Of A Man In A Blue Coat

Oil on canvas depicting a man in a half-length portrait, wearing a blue jacket with a high collar adorned with metal buttons, a dark vest, and a wide white tie.

The subject is depicted in a three-quarter view, with his head turned to the right, in a restrained composition where all attention is focused on the face. The painter pays particular attention to the gaze, the structure of the features, and the modeling of the face, giving the portrait a strong presence and genuine psychological depth.

The natural hairstyle, with the hair swept back, the high collar of his coat, and the large white cravat allow us to date the work to the late 18th century or the very early 19th century, within the stylistic context of the Directory and the Consulate, around 1795–1805.

With its simplicity, its neutral background, and the emphasis placed on the subject’s expression, this portrait follows the tradition of late 18th-century European portraiture, at a time when depictions of men of letters, scholars, or prominent figures tended to prioritize personality and facial features rather than the trappings of office.

The work has been re-stretched and mounted on a newer stretcher, indicating a previous restoration effort. A few very slight losses of paint are visible in the background, particularly above the figure’s head and on the right side, without affecting the essential parts of the composition.
