Pair Of Provençal Louis XV Armchairs In Walnut With Openwork Crossbars – 18th Century

A pair of Louis XV-era queen’s armchairs, crafted from molded and carved walnut, made in southeastern France—likely in Provence—around the mid-18th century.

The armchairs rest on four curved legs topped with small scrolls. The ornate lower band features, on the front, a remarkable rocaille motif that is deeply carved and openwork, centered on a stylized shell surrounded by foliage and volutes. This front crossbar, which is particularly intricately carved, is one of the most decorative elements of this pair.

The flat, scalloped-edge backrests are framed by moldings. The sinuous armrests, with padded cuffs, rest on strongly curved consoles that blend naturally into the chair’s overall silhouette.

The walnut wood displays a beautiful antique patina and a warm tone. The construction, joinery, and carving are characteristic of high-quality 18th-century French provincial craftsmanship. The use of walnut, the prominence of the openwork decoration, and the lively lines point to a southern French origin, likely from Provence.

The floral-patterned fabric upholstery and covers are antique but heavily worn, with visible damage and tears, particularly on one of the seats and the armrests. They need to be reupholstered, which will allow the future owner to choose a fabric that complements their interior.
