A Rare Pair Of Large Gold-damascened Scissors, In An Oriental Style—late 19th Century

A rare and elegant pair of large steel scissors, entirely adorned with remarkable gold damascene work, crafted in the style of Hispano-Moorish pieces from Toledo or late 19th-century Eastern workshops.

This beautiful piece stands out for the exceptional quality of its decoration, consisting of delicate scrollwork, palmettes, and interlacing plant motifs covering the handles as well as a large portion of the blades. The workmanship, of remarkable finesse, highlights the expertise of artisans specialized in the art of damascening—a technique involving the inlaying of thin gold fillets into pre-engraved steel.

The handles, finely cut and elegantly scalloped, feature a refined silhouette perfectly in keeping with the Orientalist style that enjoyed great popularity in Europe during the second half of the 19th century. The long, tapered blades retain their excellent decorative appeal and attest to the meticulous craftsmanship intended for a wealthy clientele.

More than just a tool, this pair of scissors is a true work of art. It may have been used for cutting precious textiles or for embroidery, or it may have been displayed as a prestige item in a cabinet of curiosities or a refined interior.

The damascening, which is particularly well-preserved, highlights the full ornamental richness of this piece. The set features a beautiful antique patina and is in very good condition, with no apparent restoration or alterations.

Dated to the 19th century.
