An Italian painter born in Turin who settled in Rome in 1874, Filiberto Petiti is best known for his landscapes of the Roman countryside, to which he renders with sensitivity and atmosphere. Trained under Felice Cerruti Beauduc, he frequented the Macchiaioli circle in Florence—notably Telemaco Signorini—before joining the Roman art scene, where he became a leading figure in landscape painting. A member and later president of the Association of Watercolorists of Rome,he regularly participated in major Italian and international exhibitions. Notably, he received a gold medal in Milan in 1893, a bronze medal at the 1900 Paris World’s Fair, and a silver medal at the 1904 St. Louis World’s Fair ( Louisiana) in 1904. He was also a member of the “XXV” group of the Campagna Romana.
The artistmaintained a close connection with Rome and its artistic community throughout his life. His studio changed locations several times: Piazza Esquilino 10, Via delle Quattro Fontane 88, Via del Babuino 99, then Via Margutta 53B, before he moved into a studio-house on Via dei Villini, and later to Via San Martino 9. Queen Margherita of Savoy, in particular, visited his studio on several occasions.
Thisinterior scene is particularly interesting for its intimate nature: it depicts his working environment, with its furniture, objects, artworks, and studio accessories, including his , and a parasol: In short, all the attributes of a plein air landscape painter. One could even go so far as to call it a sort of indirect, vicarious self-portrait.
His works are now part of several public collections, notably in Rome, Turin, Florence, and the Quirinal.
