This masterfully portrait of the Shih Tzu dog was painted in 1886 by the French-born American artist Leda Givernaud. The back of the canvas bears the stamp of an American canvas manufacturer.
The Shih Tzu is a small breed of dog originating in Tibet, likely a cross between the Pekingese and the Lhasa Apso. The Chinese describe the shape of its head as a "lion's head." Shih Tzus are known for their playful and cheerful temperament. Lively and friendly, they get along well with people of all ages, other dogs, and other pets. Aggressive Shih Tzus are rare; most of the time, these dogs are extremely affectionate.
