Czernotzky began his private painting apprenticeship in Brno with Emil Pirchan. After moving to Vienna in 1902, he continued his studies at the private painting and drawing school of David Kohn (1861-1922). He undertook several study trips to Germany, Belgium, France, the Netherlands, Denmark, and Italy. From 1911, he was a member of the Austrian Artists' Association. Czernotzky devoted himself almost exclusively to painting still lifes after Dutch models. His specialty was still lifes with antique objects such as glasses, tankards, jugs, and goblets.
