Virgin Of The Immaculate Conception, Made Of Porcelain Biscuit, From The Napoleon III Era

Statue of the Virgin of the Immaculate Conception made of biscuit porcelain (unglazed porcelain originally intended to mimic the appearance of marble).

The Blessed Virgin, standing on a starry globe and trampling the serpent of Evil, draped in a large embroidered cloak, has her hands clasped in prayer. The base bears the date December 8, 1854, when Pope Pius IX, in his bull Ineffabilis Deus, affirmed that the Blessed Virgin Mary was conceived without original sin.
This dogma gained wider recognition when it enabled the Church to confirm the identity of the Blessed Virgin appearing to Saint Bernadette of Lourdes, after the latter asked her name: “ ‘Que soy era Immaculada Councepciou’ (“I am the Immaculate Conception” ), a concept and dogma that a simple young girl from Lourdes could never have invented.
As indicated on the back of the base, our statue conforms to the official model of representation adopted by the Church for the Immaculate Conception.

It is a beautiful devotional object, highly decorative due to its large size and fine craftsmanship. It features beautiful proportions, gentle facial features, and the folds of the dress are rendered with great care.
