Cross Of The Ecclesiastical Order Of Saint Philip Of Algiers, Cardinal Lavigerie, 1867

Silver jewelry (or silver- or gold-plated metal) with hand-painted grand feu enamel on the central medallions. Cross of the Order of St. Philip of Algiers. On one side, St. Philip is depicted holding his cross. The blue inscription reads “K. M. LAVIGERIE. PRIMVS. ALGER. ARCHEP. IMPET.” This refers to Cardinal Charles Martial Lavigerie, appointed the first archbishop of Algiers (Primus Algerii Archiepiscopus), who petitioned for and obtained the creation of this order. 
On the other side is the Immaculate Conception. The inscription reads “PIVS P.P. IX INSTITVIT MDCCCLXVII” (Pope Pius IX instituted it in 1867).
In 1867, the Diocese of Algiers was elevated to the rank of archdiocese. Pope Pius IX then authorized Cardinal Lavigerie to establish this canonical order to honor clergy and dignitaries who had served the Church in Algeria. 
It is a 19th-century religious and colonial phaleristic artifact that is highly specific to the history of the Catholic Church in North Africa.
