Wedding Celebration Jug, Abruzzo, Italy, 18th Century

Wedding jar with two handles, majolica / tin-glazed earthenware (milky white / cream glaze made with tin) hand-painted in shades of cobalt blue, from the workshops of Abruzzo, Italy, 18th century. Two-handled jug (boccale or wedding boccale). These vessels were traditionally given as gifts during engagements or rural weddings in central and southern Italy.
A half-naked woman riding a donkey or a horse, beneath a tree rendered with small sponge strokes or brush marks to depict the foliage (a typical motif of 18th-century folk ceramics from Abruzzo). A male figure wearing a tall cap or a pointed hat (a craftsman’s or peasant’s cap, or a mask from the Commedia dell’arte / rustic Pulcinella). The style departs from the grand court majolica (such as the historical pieces by the Grue or Gentili families in Castelli) to align with a highly expressive local and folk artisanal tradition.
This is an authentic 18th-century rustic wedding pitcher made of Abruzzo majolica, decorated in monochrome blue. Despite its chips on the neck and missing enamel, it is a fine example of Italian folk art (arte popolare abruzzese) with significant ethnographic value.
