Condition: Re-stretched, old reinforcement patches on the back, standard restorations
Frame: Frame with black and gilded molded moldings (cassetta style)

​Oil painting on canvas depicting a Baroque religious scene rendered in vigorous and theatrical chiaroscuro.
​The composition depicts a saint (presumably Saint Jerome or Saint Francis) lying at the bottom of the painting, caught in a state of ecstasy or a heavenly vision. Above him, amid dark and dramatic clouds, appears a draped, winged angel, bearing the divine message. The pronounced use of tenebrism, the interplay of deep shadows, and the bright highlights on the figures and drapery are entirely characteristic of 17th-century Italian painting (Caravaggesque influence / Roman or Neapolitan school).
