A Small, Rare 16th-century Coin Cabinet With Carthusian Inlay Work
An interesting coin cabinet featuring panels and woodwork with Carthusian inlays from the late 15th century. Furniture of this type was common from the second half of the 15th century to the first half of the 16th century across a vast area of central Italy—including Umbria, Marche, and Tuscany—crafted by master woodworkers specializing in the construction of monumental liturgical and monastic furnishings.
The wood and panels that make up the structure, the pilasters, the drop-down door, and the veneers of the small drawers are ancient Carthusian elements dating from around the late 15th century and early 16th century, which may have been assembled into a coin cabinet as early as the 16th or 17th century. It cannot be ruled out that this may be a specific antique prototype restored in subsequent centuries; in fact, the small linings of the six interior drawers appear to have been installed during the historicist period of the 19th century.
Otherwise, it is an object of refined taste with a fully Renaissance flavor.
Dimensions are approximately 36 cm high x 38 cm long x 20 cm deep.
A certificate of authenticity is included with the sale.
