Antique Bohemian Ruby Overlay Glass Hunting Goblet, Noble Monogram, C19th

A handsome antique Bohemian ruby-overlay glass goblet, circa 1850–1870.

The goblet is richly decorated in deep ruby red and opaque white, with extensive gilt detailing. The front bears a finely painted hunting scene depicting sportsmen shooting wildfowl among reeds, accompanied by their gun dogs. The miniature is particularly well executed, with considerable detail and atmospheric perspective.

The bowl is raised upon an elegant faceted colourless glass baluster stem and a spreading circular foot decorated with alternating ruby and white panels enriched with gilding.

The reverse is engraved with the original owner’s elaborate crowned monogram, apparently incorporating the initials M and B, above a further crowned insignia resembling the badge of an order of chivalry. This strongly suggests that the goblet was privately commissioned for, or presented to, a person of considerable social standing, possibly a member of the German or Austro-Hungarian nobility. The precise identity of the original owner remains unconfirmed.

Bohemian hunting goblets of this type were frequently commissioned as aristocratic presentation pieces or hunting prizes. The combination of the finely painted sporting scene, elaborate coloured decoration and noble monogram makes this a particularly attractive example.
