Antique Northern Thai Gilt Wood Buddha On Throne, Early 19th Century Or Earlier

An antique Northern Thai carved wooden figure of the Buddha, dating from the early 19th century or earlier.

The Buddha is seated in dhyanasana upon an elaborate tiered throne, his right hand lowered in bhumisparsha mudra, the earth-touching gesture associated with the moment of enlightenment.

Carved in two sections, the Buddha and architectural throne retain extensive original gilding over red lacquer. The throne is particularly decorative, with lotus ornament, stepped mouldings and a finely carved hanging textile panel to the front.

A characterful early Northern Thai Buddhist sculpture with considerable presence and an attractive, naturally aged surface.

Height: 25.8 cm.

Condition: Good condition. Wear and losses to the gilding and lacquer, with small age-related losses to the carved decoration, as clearly illustrated.
