Statuette representing the Buddha Shakyamun
Burma, late 19th - early 20th century
The Buddha is depicted seated on a high pedestal with a double row of inverted lotus petals, his legs crossed in the vajraparyanka position, his right hand resting on his knee in the vitarka mudra, gesture of argument, and his left hand placed in his lap, palm facing upward. The Awakened One is dressed in a thick monastic robe, the uttarasangha, worn close to the body, as well as a long, finely crafted samghati draped over his left shoulder.
The face, of great gentleness, is characterized by perfectly curved, comma-shaped brow ridges above half-closed eyes, an aquiline nose above a thin mouth that forms a slight smile. The delicate hair, rendered in tiny spikes, the skull adorned with a lotus bud-shaped rasmi, the elongated ears with distended lobes extending to the shoulders, all recall the Blessed One's past worldly life.
