Antique Chinese Temmoku Tea Bowl, Song Dynasty, 12th–13th Century

A finely made Southern Song dynasty temmoku tea bowl from the Dong Zhang kiln in Fuqing, Fujian province, dating to the 12th–13th century.

Wheel-thrown stoneware with a compact rounded form and gently everted rim. The interior and upper exterior are coated in a lustrous, iron-rich black glaze with subtle metallic speckling and a soft oily sheen. The glaze stops irregularly above the lower body, revealing the coarse grey-to-buff stoneware typical of Dong Zhang production, with areas of reddish firing tone and a neatly cut foot.

Temmoku bowls from the Dong Zhang kiln were widely exported throughout East and Southeast Asia during the Southern Song period. They are distinguished from Jian ware by their lighter grey body and thinner, more fluid black glaze. Comparable examples have been recovered from the Bai Jiao shipwreck and from Southeast Asian archaeological sites.

Condition: good, with one small rim chip and minor firing flaws consistent with age.
