Thecourtesan is the character Giulietta, who embodies the poet’s third lovepoet’s third love in the act set in Venice. After his misadventures with the dollOlympia and the singer Antonia, Hoffmann arrives in Venice and falls in love with thescandalous courtesan Giulietta, even though he hadsworn never to love again. In fact, the evil Captain Dapertutto had promiseda magnificent diamond to the courtesan if she succeeded in seducing Hoffmannto steal his reflection using a magic mirror, just as she haddone with her previous lover. Alongside his illustrious career in haute couture, Karl Lagerfeld, a keenmusic lover, also designed stage costumes.
