Round lidded box decorated with brown lacquer, featuring maki-e interlacing patterns of grapevines and family crests (mon) on a nashiji background on both the lid and the body. The six mon depicted—featuring the triple leaf of the hollyhock (aoi) within a circle (maruni mitsubaaoi mon)—belong to the Owari branch of the powerful Tokugawa clan. These motifs are interwoven with traditional plant arabesques called karakusa, which translates to “Chinese grass.”
The interior of the lid reveals the sacred trio of longevity: the Japanese white pine bonsai (matsu), two cranes (tsuru), and two aquatic turtles trailing seaweed—evoking the minogame, the mythical turtle said to live a thousand years. The bamboo branches (chiku), meanwhile, symbolize flexibility, resilience, and integrity.
