Rectangular box made of reddish-brown lacquered wood, featuring a corn cob in high relief on the slightly domed lid, a technique known as takamaki-e. The design is further enlivened by two small evening cicadas (higurashi) rendered in shibayama—a technique involving the inlay of cut mother-of-pearl.
The interior of the box is studded with glitter sprinkled using the nashiji lacquer technique, also known as “pear-skin finish.”
The ear of corn is a symbol of abundance, agricultural prosperity, and fertility. When paired with lacquer boxes, it evokes the bounty of the earth and the generosity of the harvest.
