Late 18th Century. Small Ink Portrait In Profile. Louis XVI Frame
A small portrait from the Directoire period, executed in ink, in profile in the style of the “physionotraces” that were very fashionable at the time.
The figure’s attire is emblematic of the period: a jabot paired with a coat featuring large buttons, a coat with high lapels, and “dog-ear” hair that replaces the wig.
The frame is carved walnut in the Louis XVI style, as are the glass pane and the fir wood backing covered with unbleached paper.
The frame appears to be made from a single piece of wood.
A small, mischievous worm has pierced the paper at the base of the nose, creating a fake button.
