Louis XVI Coffee Table, Directoire Period
Small oval coffee table, Louis XVI style
Elegant small oval coffee table in mahogany and mahogany veneer, decorated with gilded bronze, featuring a front drawer and resting on four tapered legs with casters.
The top, made of veined white marble, is edged with an openwork gilt-bronze band featuring a latticework design and geometric motifs. The slightly curved apron is adorned with gilded bronze fillets and a drawer fitted with a lock and a handle featuring a knotted ribbon motif.
The dark wood uprights are accented with fluting and gilt-bronze moldings, while the tapered legs, also fluted, are topped with casters for easy movement.
The table features an oval mahogany lower tabletop, bordered by an openwork gilt-bronze railing and adorned with an elegant scroll-cut edge accented by a bronze strip.
The piece is characteristic of late 19th-century parlor furniture in the Louis XVI style, displaying a beautiful harmony between the warmth of the wood, the whiteness of the marble, and the delicacy of the gilded bronze.
