16th Sculpture In Pietra Serena Lion Marzocco Florentine School

A sculpture in pietra serena depicting the lion known as the Marzocco, Florentine school, 16th century.

The Marzocco is the famous lion that symbolizes the power and freedom of the Republic of Florence. The name likely derives from Martocus (“little Mars”), as in ancient times it was believed that Florence was dedicated to Mars, the god of war. The lion embodies the pride, justice, and independence of the Florentine people, and is often depicted sitting or standing while holding the shield bearing the lily of Florence. The most famous of these depictions is undoubtedly Donatello’s, now housed in the Bargello Museum, with a copy in Piazza della Signoria in front of Palazzo Vecchio.
The Marzocco also served a territorial function; it was placed in every location belonging to the Florentine Republic.

Our sculpture presumably dates to the Renaissance period; it has some missing pieces, glued sections, and old restorations.
