Natalia Sergeevna Goncharova (1881–1962), After Cubo-futurist Composition, Study For A Spanish
NATALIA SERGEEVNA GONCHAROVA (1881, 1962) After.
Cubo-Futurist Composition, Study for a Spanish Dancer.
Oil on canvas.
signature upper right: N. Goncharova.
H_52 cm W_42 cm
Good overall condition.
This dynamic and vividly coloured composition is directly inspired by Natalia Goncharova’s celebrated series of Spanish dancers, developed from the 1910s onwards and closely connected with her collaboration with Sergei Diaghilev and the Ballets Russes. Goncharova first explored the subject in 1916, after travelling through Spain with Diaghilev’s company, where she worked as a set and costume designer.
The work adopts the Cubo-Futurist deconstruction characteristic of the artist: the geometric fragmentation of forms, the superimposition of stylised floral motifs recalling lace and the traditional Spanish shawl, and a contrasting palette dominated by pink, black and intense blue. The combination of angular structure, dynamic movement and richly decorative patterning is closely associated with Goncharova’s Spanish-dancer compositions.
