Antique Afghan Tribal Ring, Silver Alloy, Turquoise Glass & Deer Intaglio, C20th

An impressive antique Afghan tribal ring, dating from the early 20th century.

This exceptionally large ceremonial or prestige ring is fashioned from silver alloy and richly ornamented with applied filigree, twisted wirework and granulation. Turquoise-blue and black glass inlays form stylised butterflies, flowers and geometric motifs across its monumental architectural body.

The ring is surmounted by a dark rectangular plaque carved in intaglio with a running deer or antelope surrounded by stylised clouds. Further dark panels and decorative details enrich the sides.

With its extraordinary proportions, this was almost certainly intended as ceremonial or prestige jewellery rather than an ordinary ring for everyday wear. It is a striking example of antique Afghan ethnic and tribal jewellery.
