A Large Louis XVI-style Centerpiece Or Planter, Made In Germany In The Late 19th Century

A striking Louis XVI-style centerpiece or planter, made in Germany in the 19th century from 800-thousandths solid silver, with a removable brass inner tray.

Oval in shape, the openwork frame is punctuated by a series of vertical slats and embellished with a remarkable floral design. Delicate garlands of roses and foliage are applied to the frame, adding texture and depth to the piece.

At either end sit two imposing ram’s heads in solid silver, cast and finely chiseled, which give the piece its spectacular character.

The large panels feature oval medallions at their centers, surrounded by rich plant motifs, while the borders are accented with friezes of foliage. The piece rests on four scroll-shaped feet adorned with acanthus leaves.

The quality of craftsmanship is particularly remarkable, combining cast silver, chasing, and numerous applied elements.

The removable brass inner tray creates an elegant contrast with the silver of the frame.
