Restored 19th-century Walnut-style Dressing Table

Toiletry chest known as a “railroadman’s chest” in burl walnut – Restoration period, 19th century

A very beautiful dressing table, known as a “railroadman’s chest,” from the Restoration period, first half of the 19th century, featuring remarkable walnut burl veneer work.

The particularly decorative front consists of four large drawers whose veneers have been carefully selected and arranged symmetrically, showcasing magnificent patterns and shades in the walnut burl.

The slightly curved upper section conceals all the necessary toiletries. The top lifts to reveal a rectangular mirror, held in place by its original hinges, as well as a beautiful vanity area entirely lined with veined white marble, including the back and sides. This design allowed for the arrangement of various toiletries while perfectly protecting the wood.

When closed, the piece regains the elegant and understated appearance of a Restoration-period chest of drawers. Note also the quality of the drawer construction, featuring dovetail joints, as well as the lock plates and small antique keys.

A piece of furniture that is at once elegant, ingenious, and rare, featuring exquisite cabinetmaking and, above all, a superb selection of burl walnut, which is particularly spectacular on the front and top.
