Vietnam: Art Of Annam, Lê Dynasty, 15th–16th Century, Cobalt Blue And White Ceramic Cosmetic Box

A magnificent circular lidded ceramic box from Annam (Vietnam), dating from the Lê Dynasty, late 15th century–early 16th century, from the Chu Dậu kilns. This cosmetic or powder box retains its original lid, topped with a lotus-shaped knob. The decoration combines a cobalt-blue underglaze design with delicate highlights of colored glazes (notably shades of green and outline lines), a variation highly sought after by collectors. The lid is adorned with a large, stylized, radiant lotus flower, while the body features a frieze of plant-inspired cartouches. The interior reveals an underglaze enamel in a very soft celadon hue. This piece bears witness to its history and centuries-old use: there is an old crack along the rim of the lid, as well as minor chips on the inner lip of the jar, which serves to secure the lid. From the same family collection as the small jar featured in another sale, it was acquired from an antique dealer in Vietnam in the 1950s and brought back to France during that period, ensuring its authenticity and ruling out the possibility that it came from a shipwreck.

Condition: Showing signs of use typical of the period. An old crack along the edge of the lid and small chips/chipping of the enamel on the rim of the pot where the lid fits. The glaze retains its beautiful luster.
