Antique Italian Majolica Serving Plate, "richard," With A Hand-painted Crown And Coat Of Arms
Large oval majolica serving plate, marked on the back “Società Ceramica Richard Milano,” an Italian manufacturer active between the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
The decoration just below the rim features a hand-painted coat of arms, consisting of a gold shield with a red rampant and crowned lion, flanked by two lions supporting it. The ensemble is crowned by a count’s noble crown and is accompanied by a cartouche bearing the Latin motto Belli Virtutis Praem: “The reward of martial virtue.”
This is an ornamental heraldic motif, typical of decorative works from the period, with no definite attribution to a specific noble family.
Condition:no chips or restorations; decoration is clear and well-preserved; slight signs of wear consistent with the period and the nature of the material (see the last two photographs).
