Stylized Motherhood – Shona Stone Sculpture, Zimbabwe
This African art form is known as Shona stone sculpture, named after the Shona people of Zimbabwe.
The Shona have been hand-carving stone for nearly a thousand years. Although this craft is ancient, the style has continually evolved; the contemporary form is more stylized, almost abstract, yet the themes these sculptures portray reflect ancestral values in Shona culture: family, love, life, and nature.
This is the case with this statue, which depicts, in a highly stylized way, a mother intertwined with her child.
