A charming German porcelain figurine set, made in Volkstedt, Rudolstadt, Thuringia, dating from the mid-19th century, in the Baroque style, and celebrating the five senses.
A small Bacchus, raising his cup to honor taste as he stands on a rock, leads the dance of four cherubs who, at his feet, celebrate smell, hearing, touch, and sight: the scent of a rose, the sound of a seashell, the brush of a bee, and no doubt a mirror was held in the fourth’s hand...
This charming piece is characterized by the exquisite finesse of its forms and polychromy.
In very good overall condition, it has a few minor losses: the tip of the pink sash worn by Cupid, who is breathing in the scent of a rose, is missing, as is the presumed mirror held by the cherub with the red-and-gold veil..., and the tiniest tips of two of his fingers (barely visible).
Everything else is free of chips, cracks, or flaking.
