Certainly, this old woman is ugly, her nose is prominent and flattened, her right eye is drooping, half-closed, and her smile seems toothless... But don't this smile and this blinking eye seem to be completely indifferent to what one might think of her?...
Under her humble provincial bonnet, it is a whole wisdom of peasant life which seems to animate her features...
For someone who has, one day, modeled clay, it is a challenge to render such a realistic and meaningful expression, and to succeed in sublimating the beauty of a subject which seems very ungrateful...
