Zucca Corse: 19th Gourd Coloquinte Engraved And Figured F.b. On Escutcheon
19th-century Corsican folk art coloquinte flask, known as a "Zucca".
Traditionally made and carried by shepherds, these flasks may also have been used for spraying, with adapted mouthpieces.
This one is engraved with geometric rosettes and bouquets of flowers; there's also a fish, a sacred heart, twigs, a clover, letters (GIP), perhaps initials..., and a curious eagle from Napoleonic imagery...
These naive but very personal engravings suggest that this object was not intended for the tourist market; moreover, a silver escutcheon bears the initials of its former owner, and no doubt author.
The small side grips are made of wicker and braided fibers; the cord, while not appearing to be original, is old and in good condition.
Excellent used condition.
Diameter = 14.5 cm, thickness = 9 cm
Weight 128 grams
Very careful shipping extra.
