Maison Vigier Aîné In Aurillac, A Folding Knife Known As “le Vigier,” Late 19th Century.

It features a Bourbon-style steel blade bearing the signature “VIGIER AÎNÉ À AURILLAC.” The particularly refined handle is composed of finely engraved and chiseled mother-of-pearl scales, adorned with a delicate floral design featuring pansies. The silver ferrule and the mounting components attest to the care taken in crafting this piece.

Vigier Cutlery, based in Aurillac, is the originator of the famous regional knife now known as “L’Aurillac.”

Historical sources indicate, however, that the knife was originally known as “Le Vigier,” before the name “L’Aurillac” became established following the cutlery company’s acquisition by Jean Destannes in 1908. Our example therefore dates from the Vigier period, prior to 1908, and features a particularly elegant and ornate version of this Auvergne knife.

The mother-of-pearl decoration and the silver ferrule give this knife a more luxurious appearance than the standard models intended for rural use. This type of small folding knife could accompany its owner in daily life and at the table, while also serving as a high-quality personal item.

The blade shows oxidation and an aged patina consistent with the object’s age. Some signs of wear are visible.
