Oil Lamp Made Of Slip With Floral Relief Decoration, Japanese-style Bronze Base — Late 19th Century
POLYCHROME BARBOTINE OIL LAMP WITH FLORAL RELIEF DECOR, JAPANESE-STYLE BRONZE BASE — LATE 19TH CENTURY
A very elegant ceramic oil lamp with polychrome barbotine decoration, adorned with a spectacular floral design rendered in high relief.
The body of the lamp is enlivened by large flowers and foliage modeled with great naturalism, whose petals and leaves stand out sharply from the body. This particularly decorative abundance of plant motifs is characteristic of the taste for naturalistic ceramics that developed in the last third of the 19th century.
The piece rests on a remarkable gilded and chiseled bronze mount, featuring openwork and plant-inspired decoration, whose forms and ornamental vocabulary reflect the era’s fascination with Japanese art and the Far East.
This combination of Impressionist ceramics with floral slip-decor and a bronze mount in the Japonist style is notably documented in the works of Montigny-sur-Loing, to which this lamp can be attributed. Similar models are also associated with the workshops of this manufacturer and with artists such as Eugène Schopin and Théodore Lefront.
The lamp retains its oil reservoir, as well as its burner and glass tube.
Condition: good overall condition. Note a small, old chip at the top of the glass tube, which has been repaired. The current electrical wiring needs to be redone.
A particularly decorative piece, combining the richness of the floral slip, the opulence of gilded bronze, and the refinement of late 19th-century Japanese-inspired design.
