Incense Box, Hirasawa Kuro, Japan
Hirasawa Kurō (平澤九朗, 1772–1840) was a Japanese samurai and potter of the late Edo period, originally from Owari Province. He is best known for his production of ceramic tea utensils, particularly those in the Shino and Oribe styles, which he crafted on a potter’s wheel.
Active in Owari Province, he served the Owari domain.
He led a dual life as a samurai—a civil servant and assistant at the Tokugawa court in Owari—and as a tea master and potter.
His ceramic art was heavily influenced by the tastes of the Tokugawa court of Owari at Nagoya Castle, which produced Ofukei-style ceramics.
He had notable students such as Masaki Sōzaburō and a successor bearing the same name, Hirasawa Kurō II.
