Felice Torelli - The Annunciation Of The Virgin
Artist: Felice Torelli
DESCRIPTION:
Felice Torelli
The Annunciation of the Virgin - Octagonal painting
Period: 18th century
Technique: Oil on canvas
Description:
A fine work by Felice Tonelli depicting the Annunciation of the Virgin. The scene shows the Virgin Mary on the left, depicted in a pose of gentle wonder and devotion, with one hand on her chest and the other raised, standing before a lectern with an open book. On the right is the Archangel Gabriel, with elegant, flowing pink drapery and a white lily in his hand, a symbol of purity.
At the top, a cherub holds a red velvet curtain with a tassel, while in the center appears the dove of the Holy Spirit, illuminating the scene.
A well-executed Baroque painting with luminous, rosy skin tones, soft and well-constructed drapery, and a warm color palette in shades of red, pink, and midnight blue. It features a highly elegant octagonal format, typical of paintings intended for coffered ceilings or overdoor panels in noble palaces.
Dimensions:
98 cm x 97 cm – octagonal format
Condition: Good. Canvas with widespread craquelure and oxidized varnish consistent with the period. Slight wear along the edges of the octagon. Requires cleaning. No visible invasive restoration.
Provenance: Italian private collection
